A joint statement was issued following a meeting of foreign ministers from the Brics (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) member states in Cape Town. The statement expressed appreciation for relevant proposals of mediation and good offices aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict. When asked during a weekly news briefing about the endorsement of a peace plan proposed by China, Bagchi responded that he couldn't confirm whether the plan could be characterized as a mediation effort. However, he emphasized India's consistent support for mediation and the pursuit of a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and dialogue. Bagchi further stated that any mediation effort that contributes to such objectives would be welcomed.

The Brics foreign ministers also recalled their respective national positions on the "situation in and around Ukraine" as expressed in international forums like the UN Security Council and General Assembly. Additionally, they called for the full and effective implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the memorandum of understanding between Russia and the UN Secretariat, which aims to promote Russian food products and fertilizers in global markets.

In addition to the aforementioned points, the joint statement emphasized the significance of ensuring the continued access of grains and fertilizers to those who are most in need. The ministers also called for reforms in the principal organs of the United Nations, including the Security Council, to enhance their capacity to address global challenges effectively. The statement highlighted China and Russia's recognition of the crucial role played by Brazil, India, and South Africa in global affairs and their shared aspiration to assume a greater role within the United Nations.

Amid the G7's efforts to address Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the G20, the Brics foreign ministers underscored the importance of the G20 as the foremost multilateral platform for economic cooperation. They emphasized the need for collective action and collaborative pursuit of solutions to global challenges within this group of the world's largest economies.
